As a Senior Mining Engineer at Björkdalsgruvan, located just outside Skellefteå, you will work with both short- and long-term mine design and scheduling, ventilation planning, and mine infrastructure. You will be responsible for developing efficient and safe mining plans and serve as a technical resource for both colleagues and other departments. At the same time, you will take on an important role as a mentor and coach to the team, sharing your expertise and supporting your colleagues in their professional development.

Björkdalsgruvan is located in Sandfors, just outside Skellefteå, and is one of Northern Europe’s largest gold ore mines. It is a relatively young operation with just over 250 committed and driven employees, along with around 100 contractors. The mine has an annual turnover of approximately 1,015 MSEK and is owned by the Canadian company Mandalay Resources.

Your Responsibilities

Your main responsibilities include:

  • Leading and reviewing short-, medium-, and long-term mine planning
  • Supporting and coaching the engineering team in their development
  • Collaborating closely with geology, production, and planning teams
  • Identifying and driving improvement initiatives and new technologies
  • Ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations
  • Contributing to strategic, long-term mine optimization

The Bigger Picture

You will be part of a team of eight people in various roles, ranging from junior to senior planners and engineers. This is a full-time, permanent position based at the Björkdalsgruvan in Kåge, just outside Skellefteå. The work is conducted in an international environment, with English as the company language. We are currently in an exciting development phase with a strong focus on technology, digitalization, and improved operational management.

Our Expectations

We are looking for someone with several years of experience in mine planning or operations, preferably with a university degree in Mining Engineering.

You are proficient in Deswik and have a solid understanding of ventilation, infrastructure, as well as both strategic and tactical mine planning. You are pedagogical, unpretentious, and experienced in mentoring colleagues at varying skill levels. The ability to communicate clearly and drive continuous improvement is essential. International experience and strong language skills are considered advantageous.

The role requires proficiency in both Swedish and English. A valid driver’s license for manual transmission vehicles (Category B) is also required.

With over 30 years of operation, the Björkdalsgruvan is a well-established and respected gold producer. Located approximately 30 kilometers north of Skellefteå, the deposit was discovered in 1985, with production commencing in 1988. It lies in northern Västerbotten, a well-known and productive mining district. Since 2014, the Björkdalsgruvan has been owned by Canadian company Mandalay Resources a strong and resourceful owner that sees great potential in the mine’s future. Through continuous investments, Mandalay Resources is committed to increasing efficiency and extending the mine’s life, which currently stands at around 10 years. For the first 20 years, operations were based on open-pit mining, but since 2008, the site has also included an underground mine. In 2019, open-pit operations were paused, and all extraction has since taken place underground. Björkdalsgruvan maintains a good dialogue with the local community and has always placed great importance on being a socially responsible player, contributing positively to regional development. Over the years, production has grown, and Mandalay Resources has a strong ambition to continue expanding its presence in the area. The vision is for Björkdalsgruvan to be a safe, long-term profitable, and sustainable gold producer.
